What happens if both parents are unfit or unable to have custody of a child?

If both parents are either unfit or unable to have physical custody of a child, the court, if it sees fit, can appoint another relative to be the child’s legal guardian. This includes grandparents. Grandparents are also able to legally adopt their grandchild, formally terminating any rights and responsibilities that the parents have to the child.
